After a year of renovation, Siam Discovery has finally opened its doors to the public on Saturday the 28th of May. Gone are the dated, tired and somewhat oppressive exterior and interior of the old mall, and in its place is a radical, futuristic design courtesy of the renowned Japanese design studio ‘Nendo’. To say that we Bangkokians are very impressed by what the design studio has achieved is an understatement. For the past few years, Siam Discovery had long lost its charm and to many people, its purpose was only there as an aircon walkway from Siam Center to MBK. So to finally see this once popular mall get a complete renovation is extremely refreshing! Now, one side of the department store’s wall consists a stack of 220 frame-shaped boxes with video monitors, digital signage and displays of merchandise that can function as a directory for what’s going on inside the mall, and as for the interior, all I can is that it’s drop dead gorgeous!
With its concept of ‘lifestyle laboratory’, rather than categorizing products by brand, each floor and retail points are presented to suit with the visitors’ mix of lifestyle experiences, for example a street lab, digital lab, creative lab, and play lab. When I went to the mall on its first opening day, the place was full of locals and tourists, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement!
The ‘Skin Lab’ on the M floor where you can test out tons of skincare products (for men and women)
Even the floor is pretty!
The retail displays in this mall are really impressive…they’re like art installations!
Super sleek cafe by Propaganda brand called ‘Cafe Now’
With the big renovation of Siam Center in 2013, the newly built EmQuartier in 2015, and now the latest spectacular renovation of Siam Discovery, when it comes to department stores, Bangkok never fails to pull out all the stops.
